Step 2: Set Up Your Comment Trigger

This is where you tell Pipeline Funnels which Instagram post to watch and which word triggers the automation.

In your new workflow:

  1. At the top, you'll see the Trigger section (it might already be there from the recipe)

  2. Click Add Trigger (or edit the existing one)

  3. Select "Instagram - User comments on a post"

Choose Your Page:

  • If you selected "Published Post," scroll through your recent posts and click the one you want

Set Your Keyword Trigger:

This is the magic part! You have two options:

  • Exact Match: Only triggers if they comment the EXACT word(s)

    • You set: "DROPS"

    • They comment: "DROPS" → ✅ Triggers

    • They comment: "drops" or "I want drops" → ❌ Doesn't trigger

  • Contains Phrase: Triggers if their comment includes your phrase anywhere

    • You set: "DROPS"

    • They comment: "DROPS" → ✅ Triggers

    • They comment: "drops" (lowercase) → ❌ Doesn't trigger

Optional Setting - First Level Comments Only:

Turn this toggle ON if you only want to respond to people commenting directly on your post (not replies to other people's comments). This is usually what you want—keeps things cleaner and prevents accidental triggers from conversation threads.

Save your trigger! Click the save or done button.

Step 3: Add a Public Comment Reply (Optional but Recommended)

This is the public message everyone sees when someone comments. It's short, friendly, and directs them to check their DMs.

Add this action:

  1. Click + Add Action below your trigger

  2. Select "Reply in Comments" (in the Communication category)

  3. Type your public response

Timing Windows (Instagram-Specific)

7-Day Window for Initial DM: After someone comments, you have 7 days to send them that first "Reply to comment via DM" message. After 7 days, Instagram blocks it. (This rarely matters since your automation sends instantly!)

24-Hour Conversation Window: Once you send a DM, you have 24 hours to send follow-up messages. After 24 hours, you need them to respond before you can message again. This is an Instagram/Facebook rule, not a Pipeline Funnels limitation.

Instagram is stricter than Facebook: Instagram watches for spam more closely. If too many people mark your DMs as spam or unwanted, Instagram may limit your account. Keep messages valuable and relevant!

Contact Creation and Data

What gets saved automatically:

  • First name (from their Instagram profile)

  • Last name (from their Instagram profile)

  • Instagram username

  • Instagram user ID (for future messaging)

  • The comment they made

  • Which post they commented on

  • Timestamp of when they engaged

What does NOT get saved automatically:

  • Email address (you need to ask for it in your conversation)

  • Phone number (you need to ask for it)

Instagram Business Account Requirements

You need:

  • Instagram Business or Creator account (not personal)

  • Connected to a Facebook Business Page

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an Instagram Business Account or can I use my personal account?

You need a Business or Creator account. Personal accounts don't support automation—this is Instagram's rule, not Pipeline Funnels'. Good news: you can convert your personal account to business in Instagram settings (takes 2 minutes), and you won't lose any followers or content!

Why does Instagram need to be connected to a Facebook Page?

Instagram automation works through Facebook's API system, so Instagram requires a linked Facebook Business Page. This is Instagram's requirement, not ours. You can create a Facebook Page in 5 minutes even if you never post there—it just needs to exist for the connection.

Can I use Quick Replies and Buttons together?

Not in the same message. Instagram limits you to one or the other. HOWEVER, if you're sending an attachment (image, video, PDF), you can ONLY use Quick Replies—buttons won't work. Plan your message flow accordingly!

What if someone comments on my Story instead of my post?

Story comment automation isn't available yet (Instagram hasn't opened that API). Your automation only works on regular posts, carousel posts, and Reels. Stories require manual responses for now.

How many Quick Replies can I have?

Up to 13! Way more than the 3-button limit. This makes Instagram perfect for product quizzes, recommendation flows, and menu-style conversations.

Will Instagram think I'm a bot and ban my account?

Can I edit the automation after someone's already in the conversation?

What happens if my DM gets marked as spam?

Instagram tracks this. If multiple people mark your DMs as unwanted or spam, Instagram may limit your messaging ability temporarily. Prevention: keep messages valuable, relevant, and welcome. Don't send aggressive sales pitches in the first message!

Can I see who triggered the automation?
